The one subtest you can genuinely cram
Twenty questions in eight minutes — about twenty-four seconds each — on aerodynamics, flight controls, aircraft systems and terminology. No reasoning will rescue you: either you know that ailerons control roll or you do not.
That sounds like bad news and is the opposite. Every other subtest measures an aptitude that moves slowly. This one measures a finite body of knowledge at roughly private-pilot ground-school level, and it does not change. If you have never flown, this is probably your largest single deficit on the battery, and it is entirely fixable in a fortnight of reading.
Candidates with flying experience should not skip it either — the questions cover a wider spread than a licence syllabus emphasises, and the terminology items in particular catch people who know the practice but not the vocabulary.
The syllabus, in the order worth learning it
1. Axes and controls
Three axes, three primary controls, three motions. Ailerons roll the aircraft about the longitudinal axis; the elevator pitches it about the lateral axis; the rudder yaws it about the vertical axis. Nearly every form asks about this, and it is the foundation everything else sits on. Learn it first and learn it cold.
2. The four forces and the wing
Lift opposes weight, thrust opposes drag, and in unaccelerated straight-and-level flight the opposing pairs are equal. Then angle of attack: the angle between the chord line and the relative wind, not the horizon. A wing stalls when it exceeds the critical angle of attack — which can happen at any airspeed and any attitude. A stall is never about the engine, and never about one fixed speed.
3. High-lift devices and load factor
Flaps increase both lift and drag: a slower approach and a steeper path. Load factor rises with bank angle in a level turn — roughly 1.4 g at 45° and 2 g at 60° — and stall speed rises with the square root of load factor, which is why a steep, slow turn is dangerous.
4. Atmosphere and performance
Standard sea-level conditions are 29.92 inches of mercury and 15 °C. Hot, high and humid all thin the air, raising density altitude, which lengthens the takeoff roll and flattens the climb. This section overlaps directly with Physical Science, so it earns points twice.
5. Airport and navigation basics
Runway numbers are the magnetic heading with the final zero dropped, so runway 27 points roughly west and the opposite end of the same strip is runway 09. Winds are named for the direction they come from — a wind from 180° is a southerly, and for an aircraft heading east it is a crosswind from the right. That convention is the most reliable trap in this material.
6. Terminology
Empennage, fuselage, chord, camber, pitot-static, go-around. These are free marks if you have read them once and lost marks if you have not, which makes them the highest-value hour in the whole subtest.
What the distractors do
Wrong answers here are usually the adjacent correct fact rather than nonsense. Asked what the ailerons control, “pitch” is offered because the elevator does control pitch. Asked about a stall, “the engine stops producing power” is offered because that is what the word means in a car.
The implication for study: learning that ailerons control roll is not enough. Learn the whole set together — which surface controls which motion about which axis — so that the adjacent fact is recognisable as belonging to a different question.
Pacing
Twenty-four seconds is generous for recall and useless for reasoning. If you know the fact, you will answer in eight seconds; if you do not, more time will not produce it. Answer, mark, move, and use the banked time on the two or three items where you can eliminate your way to a decent guess.
No penalty for guessing, so leave nothing blank. Partial knowledge is unusually valuable here because the distractors come from adjacent domains — knowing roughly what kind of thing the answer should be often removes two options.
Where it counts
Aviation Information feeds the rated composites and nothing else, so a non-rated applicant can reasonably skip it entirely. Check how the composites are built before investing time.
For rated applicants it belongs first in the study plan, ahead of the maths, because knowledge gaps close faster than skill gaps and the early progress is motivating. Pair it with Instrument Comprehension, which assumes the vocabulary this subtest teaches.
It is also the final subtest of the appointment, which is worth knowing: whatever you have left in the tank at the four-hour mark is what you bring to it.
How to study it in two weeks
Work the six areas above in order, one per session, and write each one out from memory afterwards rather than re-reading it. Recall practice beats review by a wide margin for exactly this kind of material — being able to recognise a fact when you see it is not the same as being able to produce it in twenty-four seconds.
Then do a second pass concentrating only on the relationships rather than the isolated facts: which surface moves which way about which axis, and which condition produces which performance change. The subtest’s distractors are adjacent correct facts, so knowing items in isolation leaves you vulnerable in a way that knowing the structure does not.
If you have longer than two weeks, the extra time is better spent on Math Knowledge than on going deeper here. This subtest has a ceiling, and you reach it quickly.
