Two instruments, twelve seconds
Each item shows an artificial horizon and a compass. Together they tell you three things: whether the nose is up or down, which way the aircraft is banked, and what heading it is on. Twenty-five questions in five minutes is about twelve seconds each, so there is no time to puzzle anything out.
For candidates with a flying background this is close to free. For everyone else it looks impenetrable for about twenty minutes and then becomes mechanical, which makes it one of the better returns on a short study session.
How our version differs from the official subtest
On the official test you read the dials and then choose between four aircraft silhouettes. We render the same two instruments from attitude data and ask you to describe the attitude in words instead, because we will not reproduce test artwork we do not own.
The skill being drilled — reading bank, pitch and heading together, at speed — is identical. The answer format is not, so expect silhouettes on test day. We would rather tell you that here than let you discover it.
Ask which wing is low
The artificial horizon is built around one idea that catches nearly everyone at first: the horizon line stays level with the world, and the little aircraft symbol is fixed to the instrument case. So when the horizon looks tilted, it is the aircraft that is banked — in the opposite direction to the way the horizon appears to lean.
Trying to reason about that rotation under a twelve-second clock is how candidates lose this subtest. The reliable question, which works every time and requires no reasoning at all, is: which wing of the fixed symbol is closer to the ground? If the right wing sits nearer the brown half, the aircraft is banked right. That is the whole technique.
Pitch is simply above or below
If the aircraft symbol sits above the horizon line, the nose is up and the aircraft is climbing. Below the line, it is descending. On the line, level flight. There is nothing more to it, and no rotation to think about.
Note that pitch attitude and flight path are not the same thing in reality — an aircraft can be nose-up and descending — but this subtest is asking what the instrument shows, not what the aerodynamics imply.
The compass reads under the top index
The card rotates; the index at the top does not. Whatever number sits under that fixed index is your heading. North is 000 or 360, east 090, south 180, west 270. If you find yourself converting or subtracting, you are overcomplicating it.
The reciprocal — the heading 180° away — is offered as a wrong answer on most items, because reading the bottom of the card instead of the top is the standard error. Fix your eye on the index before you read anything.
Work in a fixed order
Pitch, then bank, then heading, every time. Twelve seconds is plenty for three quick reads in a fixed sequence and nowhere near enough if you re-examine the dials each time you look at a new answer option.
Resolve all three before you look at the choices, then find the option that matches. That way the options cannot talk you out of a correct reading — which matters here, because our distractors are built by reversing exactly one element: bank direction, pitch sense, or the reciprocal heading. Each wrong answer is a plausible misreading rather than an obviously wrong one.
What to learn beforehand
Very little, and that is the appeal. Know what an artificial horizon shows, know that the sky half is above and the ground half below, know that the aircraft symbol is fixed, and know how to read a compass card under a top index. That is the entire prerequisite.
The vocabulary overlaps with Aviation Information — bank, pitch, attitude, heading, the axes of flight — so studying the two together is more efficient than either alone. If you are starting from no aviation background at all, do Aviation Information first: it gives you the concepts this subtest assumes.
Where it counts
Instrument Comprehension feeds the rated composites, so it matters to pilot and Air Battle Manager applicants and not at all to non-rated candidates. It improves quickly once the “which wing is low” habit replaces reasoning about rotation, then plateaus — so a short focused session is worth much more here than sustained grinding.
It arrives tenth in the appointment, after the break and after Table Reading. Twelve seconds a question at that point in a five-hour session is a different proposition from twelve seconds when fresh, which is worth meeting once in a full-length exam.
Building the habit so it survives the clock
The “which wing is low” rule is easy to understand and surprisingly easy to abandon under pressure. What breaks it is a steep bank: at forty-five degrees the horizon looks dramatic, and the instinct to reason about the picture returns. Practise the steep-bank items deliberately rather than skipping past them, because those are the ones that will cost you.
A useful drill is to cover the answer choices entirely, say the attitude out loud in the fixed order — pitch, bank, heading — and only then reveal the options. It feels artificial and it is exactly the sequence you want automatic by test day, because the options are constructed to talk you out of a correct reading. Reversed bank and reciprocal heading are always among them.
