Forty lookups in seven minutes

You are shown a grid with X values across the top and Y values down the side. Each question gives you an X and a Y, and you report the value where they meet. That is the entire task, forty times, at roughly ten seconds each.

There is no reasoning here and no knowledge to acquire. Table Reading measures whether you can do something trivial, quickly, forty times in a row, without your eye slipping a row. That makes it unlike every other subtest — and it makes it the fastest place on the whole battery to gain points, because improvement comes purely from method and repetition.

The wrong answers are the cells next door

This is the mechanic that decides the subtest. The distractors are not random numbers — they are the values immediately above, below, left and right of the correct cell. That is precisely where you land after miscounting a single row or a single column.

The consequence is that a near miss looks exactly as plausible as the right answer. You cannot sanity-check your way out of an error here the way you can on a maths question, because every option is a real number from the same neighbourhood of the same table. Precision on the first pass is the only defence, which is why method matters more than speed.

Our generated tables use the same construction, because building distractors any other way would make our practice easier than the real thing and teach you a false sense of your accuracy.

A method that survives forty repetitions

  1. Read the X value first and anchor on that column header. Finger, cursor or eye — but fix it and do not let it drift.
  2. Read the Y value and track down the left edge to that row label.
  3. Bring the two together and read the cell.
  4. Only then look at the options.

Always in that order. Alternating between X-first and Y-first is what produces transposition errors — reading the value at (2, −1) when the question asked for (−1, 2). Both cells exist, both values are plausible, and only one is right.

Negatives are where most points go

The axes run through zero, so half the labels are negative. Under time pressure it is easy to treat −3 as “three places from the left edge” rather than “three places left of zero”, and on a seven-by-seven grid those are different cells.

Anchor on the zero row and the zero column rather than the table edge. Once zero is your reference point, negatives stop being a separate skill and become the same counting task in the other direction.

Do not check your work

This is the one subtest where re-verifying is a net loss. At ten seconds an item, a single re-check costs you the chance to answer another question — and since your second look uses the same eyes and the same method that just produced the answer, it rarely catches anything.

Trust the lookup, mark it, move. Accuracy on this subtest comes from a clean method executed once, not from double-checking. If you find yourself wanting to re-check, that is a signal your method is not yet automatic: fix that in practice, not on test day.

Practise it daily, in small doses

Fifteen minutes a day for a month will transform this subtest, and it is genuinely one of the few places where that claim is not marketing. The skill is perceptual and it responds to repetition the way a physical skill does — short frequent sessions build it far better than occasional long ones.

Because our grids are generated from a seed rather than drawn by hand, there is no fixed set to memorise: you get a fresh table every time, and the answers are computed from the same data that renders the grid. That is exactly what this subtest needs, and it is why we built the generator rather than publishing a static set.

Where it counts

Table Reading feeds the rated composites, so for anyone applying for a flying slot it sits alongside Math Knowledge as one of the highest-value subtests on the test — with the significant advantage that it is far easier to improve, because the gains need no knowledge.

It also arrives late in the appointment, after the break, when concentration is lowest. That is worth rehearsing in a full-length sitting rather than only in isolation, because ten seconds a question feels very different three hours in.

How to practise it so the gains stick

Treat accuracy as the target first and speed as the consequence, not the other way round. Candidates who chase speed from day one build a fast, sloppy method and then spend weeks unlearning it. Work at a pace where you get essentially everything right, and let the pace come down on its own as the method becomes automatic — it will, and faster than forcing it.

Track two numbers rather than one: how many you answered, and how many you got right. A session where you answered thirty-two and got thirty-two right is better preparation than one where you answered forty and got thirty-four, even though the second looks more like the real thing. The first is a clean method; the second is a method that breaks under pressure, and pressure is exactly what test day supplies.

The clock is the subtest

Nothing here is conceptually hard: find the row, find the column, read the value. The difficulty is entirely that you have well under half a minute per lookup, and accuracy under that pressure is a trained habit rather than an ability. Practise this one against a timer or you are practising something else.
