Privacy Policy

The short version

Your practice answers never leave your browser. There are no accounts and no advertising on this site at present, so there is very little for this policy to describe. Advertising is intended and will change part of this page when it arrives; accounts are not, because the site has no login and no user database by design. Either way this page changes in the same release as the feature, not afterwards.

Practice tests and score reports

When you take a practice test, your answers, timings and score are held in your browser. They are not transmitted to us, not stored on a server and not associated with any identifier. An attempt in progress is saved as you go so that closing the tab does not cost you the sitting, and a finished attempt is kept as a summary so you can see whether you are improving.

The consequence, and it cuts both ways: no record of how you performed exists anywhere outside your own screen, and equally there is no backup we can restore for you. Clearing your browser data, using private browsing, or moving to another device loses it. The export button below is the answer to that, and it is the only one there is.

What we store on your device

• afoqt-theme — Remembers whether you chose the light or dark colour theme.
• afoqt:progress:v1 — Holds your practice attempts — the one in progress so you can resume it, and finished ones so you can see a trend. It contains no name, email or identifier of any kind, and there is no copy of it anywhere but this browser.

This is stored locally by your browser and never sent to us. It contains no identifier and cannot be used to recognise you. Clearing your browser storage removes it. See the cookie policy for the fuller picture.

Accounts

There are no accounts on this site. Nothing asks for your name, your email address or any other personal detail in order to practise, and nothing requires you to identify yourself.

Analytics

2 services count page views for us:

• Vercel Analytics, run by Vercel Inc.. It records the page you viewed, the page that referred you, and coarse device information such as browser, operating system and country. It sets no cookie and writes nothing to your device.
• Google Analytics 4, run by Google LLC. It records the page you viewed, the page that referred you, and coarse device information such as browser, operating system and approximate country. It sets 2 cookies, named in the cookie policy — but not for readers in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, who get no cookie from it at all.

Where a cookie is set, it exists to tell a returning reader from a new one and nothing else; the cookie policy names each one, its lifetime, and who it is set for. None of it is connected to your practice answers, which never leave your browser at all — the analytics know that a page was viewed, not what you did on it or how you scored.

These are the only things on the site that send anything anywhere, and they are here for a narrow reason: with no accounts and no server-side records, it is otherwise impossible to know whether anybody is using the site or whether a page is broken. If you would rather not be counted, any tracker blocker will stop them, and nothing on the site breaks when they are blocked.

Advertising

No advertising is served on this site and no advertising request is made. Nothing here loads an ad script, sets an advertising cookie or reserves space for one. If that ever changes, a consent mechanism will be in place first where the law requires one, and this page will change in the same release. The rules that will apply are published in advance in our advertising policy.

Payments

No payments are processed and none ever will be: the site is free, has no accounts and contains no checkout, plan or payment code.

What we receive automatically

The site is served by a commercial hosting platform which, like any web host, processes standard request information such as IP address and user-agent in order to deliver pages and protect against abuse. We do not use that to build a profile of you and we do not combine it with anything else.

That is the whole of it. There is no request identifier, no session cookie and no server-side log of your own that we keep — every page is built once and served from a cache, so there is no per-visitor request for us to record even if we wanted to.

We keep your message so we can act on it — for example, to correct a question you reported — and we do not use contact details for marketing. See the contact page.

Children

This site is intended for adults preparing for officer commissioning. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Why the site is built this way

Collecting nothing was a design decision with real costs, and it is worth explaining rather than presenting as a virtue that happened by itself.

Scoring in the browser rather than on a server means there is no attempt record on our side to store, no session to track and no identifier to attach to you. Your history is kept — but it is kept on your machine, and that has a real cost: it does not follow you to another device, and clearing your browser data destroys it with no backup for us to restore from. An account would solve both problems, and we are not adding one. The export file is the deliberate substitute, and it puts the only copy in your hands rather than ours.

The benefit is that this document is short and, more importantly, checkable. You do not have to trust a claim about how carefully we handle your practice results, because we never receive them — and you can confirm that for yourself by watching the network panel while you take a test, or by reading the exported file and seeing that it is the only place the data exists.

What we will not do

• Sell or share your data with data brokers. Not as a current practice and not as a future revenue option.
• Use your practice performance for anything except showing it to you. Aggregate item statistics — how often a question is answered correctly — are anonymous and exist to find bad questions, not to profile candidates.
• Send marketing you did not ask for. A message to us about a wrong answer key is not consent to be emailed about a product.
• Share anything with recruiters, commissioning sources or any government body. We have no relationship with any of them, and your practice results are not evidence of anything anyone should be acting on.

Your saved progress, and how to take it or destroy it

Access, portability and erasure are rights you would normally exercise by writing to somebody and waiting. Here they are three buttons, because the data is on your machine and we could not act on such a request even if you sent one — we have no copy to produce and nothing to delete.

The export is plain JSON, deliberately. You can open it in any text editor and read exactly what this site knows about you, which is the only way to check that this page is telling the truth.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete personal data held about you. Since we hold no personal data about visitors, in most cases there is nothing for us to act on — the controls above are where your practice data lives, and they work without asking us. If you believe we hold something about you, contact us and we will deal with it.

Changes to this policy

When the site starts doing something new with data — accounts, analytics, advertising or payments — this page is updated in the same release as the feature, and the review date at the top changes. Material changes will also be noted on the corrections log.
