How Long to Study for the AFOQT

What a two, four, eight or twelve-week AFOQT study runway can realistically deliver, and what each one cannot. Start by knowing where you stand.

The honest answer depends on two things

Which composites you need, and how far your weakest one is from where it needs to be. Any timeline offered before you know both is guesswork.

So take the diagnostic before choosing a date. A non-rated applicant already comfortable with verbal and quantitative material may genuinely need two weeks. A rated applicant with no aviation background and rusty algebra needs three months, and finding that out in week ten is expensive.

One thing to settle before you book

If a retake replaces your previous score rather than supplementing it, there is rarely a good reason to sit underprepared to “see how it goes”. Confirm the rule with your recruiter first — it changes the whole calculation. See the retake policy.

Two weeks

What it buys: familiarity with the format, a pacing plan, and the knowledge subtests.

Two weeks is enough to learn the structure, rehearse the tight clocks, and close a specific knowledge gap — most usefully Aviation Information, which is finite and learnable. It will not move Reading Comprehension, and it will not rebuild algebra you have not used in six years.

  • Days 1–2: diagnostic, then read the format and scores guides.
  • Days 3–9: Aviation Information and Table Reading daily; vocabulary roots each morning.
  • Days 10–12: one full-length test, then work only what it exposed.
  • Days 13–14: light review, formula recall, rest.

Four weeks

What it buys: the above, plus real movement on the perceptual subtests.

Four weeks is where Table Reading and Block Counting start showing genuine gains, because both respond to daily repetition rather than study. It is also enough to refresh most of the Math Knowledge syllabus if the material is dormant rather than absent.

  • Week 1: diagnostic, format, knowledge gaps.
  • Week 2: mathematics refresher; fifteen minutes of Table Reading daily.
  • Week 3: full-length test mid-week, then targeted work on what it exposed.
  • Week 4: second full-length, consolidation, taper.

Eight weeks

What it buys: the standard recommendation, and room for every improvable subtest.

Eight weeks fits the natural rhythm of the material — knowledge first, skills second, rehearsal third — and leaves room to re-order your priorities halfway through, which almost always reveals that the original ranking was wrong somewhere.

  • Weeks 1–2: diagnostic, aviation knowledge, vocabulary roots.
  • Weeks 3–5: mathematics in depth; Table Reading and Block Counting daily; weekly test.
  • Week 6: re-diagnose and re-prioritise.
  • Week 7: full-length under real conditions; work the gaps.
  • Week 8: second full-length early, then consolidation and rest.

Twelve weeks or more

What it buys: a genuine mathematics rebuild, and not much else.

Past about eight weeks the returns fall away sharply for everything except mathematics, which is the one area where a foundation can be rebuilt rather than merely refreshed. If your algebra and geometry were never solid, twelve weeks is well spent. If they are simply rusty, it is not.

Long runways have a characteristic failure: taking test after test until you are recognising items rather than solving them. Cap yourself at three full-length exams across the entire period and spend the rest on material.

Frequency beats volume

Four to six focused hours a week, spread across four or five days, outperforms the same total in one weekend session. Word Knowledge, Table Reading and Block Counting all decay quickly, and short daily contact is what keeps them sharp — which is what the daily set exists for.

A plan you sustain at four hours a week beats a plan you abandon at twelve. Be honest about which one you are writing.

Working backwards from a fixed test date

If the date is already set, the plan is constrained rather than chosen, and the useful question changes from “how long do I need” to “what do I drop”.

Take your diagnostic ranking, cross off every subtest that does not feed a composite you need, and then cut from the bottom of what remains by how slowly it moves. Reading Comprehension goes first — it returns least per hour on a short runway. Physical Science goes next if it does not feed your composites. What survives gets the time.

This feels uncomfortable because it means deliberately not preparing for parts of the exam. It is still correct: four subtests prepared properly beats nine prepared superficially, and a short runway forces the choice whether or not you make it consciously.

Signs your plan is not working

  • Three flat weeks on the weekly test. Usually means you are practising rather than studying — taking tests without returning to the material behind the misses.
  • The same subtest at the bottom of every diagnostic. Either you are not actually working it, or your method for it is wrong. More repetitions of a broken method do not help.
  • Improving on everything except what you need. Easy to do, because the enjoyable subtests get the attention. Check your ranking against the composites you actually need.
  • You have stopped doing the daily set. Almost always the first thing to slip, and the thing holding the recall subtests together.

What no timeline can deliver

Reading Comprehension tracks a habit built over years and moves least regardless of runway. Learn the question types and the degree-word trap, then stop and put the hours where they earn more. That is not defeatism; it is the correct allocation.
